Green Door Studio:

Kate Bright: turning inward (painting in the hall)

In July 2003, Kate Bright exhibited a body of energetic oil paintings. Kate's paintings were hung several inches out from the wall.

Exhibit statement:

The goals set forth with these paintings have been few beyond their initial, visual and reactive qualities. This is simply because they were painted with gesture and reactive thought rather than planned ideology. So ultimately, we, as viewers, are left with an open invitation to see what we desire, making use of our visual perspective.

Playing with the remnants of line and color, each piece represents emotional time rather than concrete thought and image. The paintings, as a whole, deal with movement through and extended space, taking advantage of that which may lie beyond their borders while bombarding us with an image and shape. It is as if one is glimpsing the epicenter or detail of a larger moment. It is a play with depth and time reversal (meaning that one may see time from several angles as cubism allows one to see several sides of one object or space). It is intended to engulf us and make us see something different with every viewing.

The moments and shapes are bodily in many ways. We, as viewers, are drawn inward, physically and mentally connecting with each painting as we may see glimpses of ourselves and our lives with in them. But nothing is blatant or obvious. Each time we come back to a painting there is a new inward expression. We see something different in the visual elements to bring new experiences to the surface. This is my intention: to have, us, as viewers experience each painting visually, but for us to find something more there.
