It is only in recent years that I have renewed my love for black and white imaging, developing my unique way of seeing as I go. I am constantly experimenting with new techniques and themes, yet never venture far from realism. I enjoy using a shallow depth of field focusing on relatively simple images.
Sometimes my focus is so tight, only texture, shape and shadow are evident. The detail of an image often takes precedence over it’s overall context. Reality becomes abstract.
I do no commercial work. I prefer to maintain the freedom to see with my own eye, however jaundiced.
I have attended workshops at Snow Farm in Massachusetts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee and the Maine Photographic Workshops in order to better train my eye and perfect my craft.
Most recently, I’ve been experimenting with different film and print formats while exploring a more abstract photographic vision. I have also worked with alternative photographic processes, primarily kallitypes, to reinterpret my previous images. While I often return to the familiar realm of natural themes and realism, I believe the ability to see the world from a more abstract perspective helps me stretch and grow as an artist. What has become more clear to me in recent days, is that I'm a romantic at heart. It is the aesthetic interpretation of nature, of landscapes, of people in their surroundings that intrigue me, not the scene itself. Even my street shooting, what I once believed to be documentary in style, is really more about my sense of aesthetics, than an impartial rendering of time and place.
I make my home in northern New York, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Most darkroom work is done at the Green Door Studio in Burlington, VT.
